Teil sogar auf dem<strong> Elisabethweg.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Begegnungen<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Bei unserem Spaziergang am 3. Winter 1946 gibt es (in Deutschland)  zahlreiche Hungertote. Die Westalliierten sehen die Katastrophe kommen. Doch weder Briten noch Amerikaner wollen, zun\u00e4chst jedenfalls, ihren Steuerzahlern zu Hause zumuten, ein paar Monate nach der Befreiung der KZ Bergen-Belsen oder Dachau, die Deutschen zu alimentieren. Andererseits \u2013 verhungern lassen will man sie auch nicht. Im Januar 1946 erscheint in der amerikanischen Zeitschrift \u201eLife\u201c ein flammender Appell des Schriftstellers John Dos Passos. Unumwunden hei\u00dft es da:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <em>\u201eAmerikaner setzen ihren Sieg in Europa aufs Spiel. Wir haben das Hitler-Regime hinweggefegt, aber viele Europ\u00e4er glauben, dass die Heilung schlimmer ist als die Krankheit.\u201c<\/em><br>Das wirkt. In Amerika schlie\u00dfen sich \u00fcber 20 Wohlfahrtsverb\u00e4nde zu einer Arbeitsgemeinschaft zusammen, die ein einziges Ziel hat: den hungernden Deutschen zu helfen. Darunter befinden sich neben j\u00fcdischen auch zahlreiche kirchliche Organisationen: die Heilsarmee, die Mennoniten, die Qu\u00e4ker und die \u201eChurch of Brethren\u201c, eine urspr\u00fcnglich aus Deutschland stammende, pietistische Gemeinschaft. Sie alle gr\u00fcnden die \u201e<strong>C<\/strong>ooperative for <strong>A<\/strong>merican <strong>R<\/strong>emittance to <strong>E<\/strong>urope\u201c, die \u201eGenossenschaft f\u00fcr amerikanische Sendungen nach Europa\u201c, kurz \u201eCare\u201c genannt. Es ist eine Abk\u00fcrzung, die als Akronym gleichzeitig auf das Wort \u201eto care\u201c \u2013 \u201ef\u00fcr jemanden sorgen\u201c \u2013 hinweist:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201eDamals, 1946, kamen die amerikanischen Wohlfahrtsverb\u00e4nde, die sich in der Care-Organisation zusammengeschlossen hatten, und brachten uns Pakete, die aus der Armee \u00fcbernommen worden waren und das Lebensnotwendigste einer Familie boten.
